Different hair types & Their different needs

Different Hair Types

  • Anatomy:  Straight hair has a round hair shaft that grows perpendicular to the scalp. The cuticles are typically smooth and lay flat along the hair shaft.
  • Physiology: The sebaceous glands in the scalp produce sebum, which can easily travel down the smooth hair shaft, resulting in a tendency for greasiness at the scalp.
  • Unique Issues: Greasiness at the scalp, potential for product buildup, lack of volume. (flat hair with no body)
  • Best ingredients: Lightweight, non-greasy ingredients such as chamomile extract, aloe vera, and silk proteins can help to add moisture and shine without weighing down the hair. Ingredients like tea tree oil, witch hazel, and rosemary oil can also help to control excess sebum production at the scalp. Lightweight, non-greasy ingredients for straight hair do not weigh down the hair shaft or disrupt the smooth cuticle structure, helping to maintain the straight texture.
  • Anatomy:  Wavy hair has a slight “S” shaped curl pattern that is looser than curly hair but tighter than straight hair. The hair shaft is typically oval or slightly flattened, and the cuticles may not lay flat along the entire hair shaft, making it more porous.
  • Physiology: The uneven curl pattern of wavy hair can cause the cuticles to not lay flat along the entire hair shaft, making it more porous and prone to frizz and dryness.
  • Unique Issues: Frizz, dryness, lack of curl definition, potential for product buildup.
  • Best ingredients: Ingredients that provide hydration and help to seal the cuticles, such as shea butter, argan oil, and coconut oil, can help to reduce frizz and add definition to the waves. Ingredients like glycerin, panthenol, and honey can also help to retain moisture in the hair and enhance the natural curl pattern. Hydrating and sealing ingredients for wavy hair help to retain moisture in the porous hair shaft, reduce frizz, and enhance the natural curl pattern without weighing down the hair.
  • Anatomy: Curly hair has a well-defined “S” or “Z” shaped curl pattern that can range from loose curls to tight coils. The hair shaft is typically oval or flattened, and the cuticles may be raised, leading to higher porosity.
  • Physiology: The tight curl pattern of curly hair makes it difficult for the sebum to reach the ends of the hair, resulting in natural dryness. The porosity of curly hair can also vary, with higher porosity in tighter curls
  • Unique Issues: Dryness, frizz, lack of curl definition, tangling, potential for breakage.
  • Best ingredients: Moisturizing ingredients such as avocado oil, jojoba oil, and mango butter can help to combat dryness and provide much-needed hydration to curly hair. Ingredients like aloe vera, flaxseed extract, and marshmallow root can also help to define curls, reduce frizz, and detangle the hair. Moisturizing ingredients for curly hair provide essential hydration to combat dryness and define curls, while detangling ingredients help to manage the tangling issues caused by the tight curl pattern.
  • Anatomy: Coily/kinky hair has a tight curl pattern that ranges from small coils to densely packed zig-zag curls. The hair shaft is typically flat or twisted, and the cuticles are often raised, resulting in high porosity.
  • Physiology: The tight curl pattern and coarser texture of coily/kinky hair make it naturally dry, as the sebum has a harder time traveling down the hair shaft. The high porosity of coily/kinky hair can also lead to increased moisture loss.
  • Unique Issues: Dryness, fragility, shrinkage, tangling, matting, potential for breakage.
  • Best ingredients:  Deeply nourishing and moisturizing ingredients such as shea butter, cocoa butter, and castor oil are beneficial for coily/kinky hair, as they can help to retain moisture and prevent dryness. Ingredients like hibiscus extract, slippery elm bark, and baobab oil can also help to soften and detangle the hair, while promoting healthy hair growth.
  • Deeply nourishing and moisturizing ingredients for coily/kinky hair help to replenish the natural oils lost due to the coarser texture and high porosity, preventing dryness and promoting softness and manageability. Detangling ingredients also help to reduce tangling, matting, and potential breakage.
